Skagit County promotes farmland succession to support the next generation of farmers.
The Hind Canadian Times Editorial Desk – November 6, 2026
Mount Vernon, Washington: The Skagit County Farmland Legacy Program has announced a series of three winter workshops aimed at helping farmers, landowners and agricultural professionals plan successful farmland transfers and protect the region’s agricultural future.
Titled “Passing Our Fields Forward,” the free workshop series will take place on December 9, 2026, January 13, 2027, and February 10, 2027, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Shawn O’Donnell’s at the Farmhouse in Mount Vernon.
The three sessions will focus on Vision, Values and Goals; Ownership and Leasing; and Affordability Tools and Models, addressing important challenges involved in transferring farmland to the next generation.
According to the programme information, the average age of farmers in Washington State is 59.3 years, while more than 40 per cent of America’s farmland is owned by people over 65. These demographic changes highlight the growing importance of succession planning to prevent agricultural land from being lost to development.
The initiative builds on the success of the previous Your Farm’s Future workshops and will provide practical guidance, expert discussions and opportunities for farmers to exchange experiences. Each session will also include a dinner to encourage community networking.
The programme is being organised in collaboration with several agricultural organisations, including Washington State University Skagit County Extension, Skagit Farm Bureau, Skagitonians to Preserve Farmland and Skagit Conservation District.
Farmers, ranchers, landowners and other interested participants are encouraged to register for one or all three sessions. Registration is required.
